There’s a no-smoking policy for any indoor areas. With the waters of Shallowbag Bay practically lapping on its lawn, the Tranquil House Inn offers wonderful views of the bay and the boardwalk and is right at the heart of the downtown Manteo activity. The picturesque inn boasts modern conveniences in 25 individually decorated rooms and suites. Children are welcomed in all rooms, and bicycles are provided for guests. A continental breakfast is offered each morning, and there’s a wine and cheese reception for guests in the evening. The on-site restaurant, 1587, is one of the best dining establishments on the Outer Banks, a great place for a special dinner.

The Elizabethan Inn lives up to its name with a Tudor-style exterior. It’s the largest inn on the island with 78 smoking and nonsmoking rooms in a variety of configurations, including one efficiency unit, one apartment and two Jacuzzi suites. All rooms have wireless Internet, a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, hairdryer and ironing equipment. There are a few pet-friendly rooms. The Elizabethan Inn is centrally located and within biking distance of most Roanoke Island attractions, including the Manteo waterfront and the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Complimentary bicycles are offered to all guests. Some of the other amenities at this hotel are an outdoor pool, gazebo and picnic facilities, meeting/banquet space for up to 80 people and a fitness center offering a heated indoor pool, weights and cardiovascular equipment, fitness classes, a sauna and a hot tub.
