You could easily spend your whole day shopping on Roanoke Island.

Shopping opportunities have greatly expanded in Manteo in recent years, especially in the historic waterfront area. Nowadays in that area you’ll find several antiques shops, a working blacksmith, art galleries, fine apparel shops, fun gift shops, a classic bookstore, a day spa/salon and even a wine and specialty shop, among many others. In the waterfront area, you can easily park the car then stroll around from shop to shop (see our note about parking downtown). The other area to do some shopping is on the main highway, U.S. 64/264, where you’ll find several other great locally run shops. On the highway, you’ll want to drive or bike between stores. Most of the necessities you’ll need — groceries,

Roanoke Island Guide - Shopping Picture
sundries, prescriptions, dry cleaning, gasoline and the like — can be found on the main highway. Shopping in Wanchese is very limited, but we lead you to a couple of shops with true local flavor.

There are several small parking lots in the historic waterfront area plus a lot of on-street parking spaces. Oftentimes, especially when there are a lot of tourists milling about, all the spaces near the waterfront will be full. If you can’t find a parking space, don’t worry. Just head over the little bridge to Roanoke Island Festival Park, where there is more than enough free parking. Or you can just drive a few blocks up one of the side streets and park alongside the road. The one or two block walk back to waterfront area will be an enjoyable one.

This family-owned strip of stores, all connected by interior doors, is Wanchese's only shopping center. The Red and White is the village grocery store, stocking a selection of meats and produce and all the other usual grocery items. The old-fashioned hardware store sells a variety of tools and parts and a few house wares and plants. Mann's Family Steakhouse and Luncheonette is next door (see Restaurants).

Nick-E Stained Glass
813 Old Wharf Road, Wanchese

The Nicks sell their colorful stained-glass creations, including window ornaments, sun-catchers, lamps and more at Dare Jewelers at the Outer Banks Mall in Nags Head, but they open their studio by appointment. The Nicks teach classes in this art form - they've had more than 500 students in the past 20+ years - but they're scaling back now and offer only limited classes. If you want to meet two stained-glass professionals, give them a call and set up an appointment.
