Spring Tide Studios is the studio and gallery of local artists Carl and Kim McCoy. Carl makes furniture and carves funny and happy images and sayings on wood. Kim paints the furniture and carvings in bright, fun, seaside-inspired themes and colors. Their creations are the perfect adornments for vacation homes, but they also make great décor for any home, and they’ll have you thinking of the Outer Banks all year round. Some carvings we saw on our visit: “Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses,” “I’m Not a Nag, I’m a Motivational Speaker,” “Don’t Try So Hard to Fit In When You Were Born to Stand Out.” You’ll also find other beach-cottage inspired gifts, like books and frames.
Tena and Company Gifts

Tena and Company is a gift shop offering a variety of fine gifts, home accessories and wine. Tena and Company shares its building with Holiday House Flowers, Manteo’s only full-service florist, which includes a greenhouse. This is also a wedding-planning headquarters, where you can hire the services of Holiday House Flowers, Seaside Simplicity wedding planners and Kristi Midgette Wright Photography.
The Christmas Shop and Island Gallery

After a few years being closed, The Christmas Shop is now open again, and locals and visitors couldn’t be happier! It smells, sounds, looks and feels like Christmas year round at The Christmas Shop, a Roanoke Island tradition since it opened in 1967. Inside you’ll find room after room after room of holiday-related ornaments and decorative items plus toys, collectibles, candles, flowers, souvenirs and lighthouses. Upstairs is a room dedicated to Halloween and autumn. The shop seems to go on forever, and as you wander around you’ll eventually come to the Island Gallery, which features a variety of artwork, pottery, prints, paintings, jewelry and more. The gallery features the fine art of many local artists. Even farther back into the store, you’ll come across the General Store, which is an amazing re-creation of an old general store that is still standing on the mainland. The General Store has an authentic, old-fashioned appeal, and its Candy Counter is a great place to reminisce. Other great shops are tucked in various spaces. The Pirate’s Wife sells T-shirts with hundreds of custom designs available. Outer Banks Fudge Co. offers a huge array flavors. History Island Bookstore is a pleasure to browse. And Ron Vick Jewelry features hand-crafted, beautiful selections.
The Coffeehouse on Roanoke Island

When you’re out shopping in downtown Manteo, you’ll definitely want to make a stop at this neighborhood coffeehouse for expertly prepared coffee and espresso drinks, tea, smoothies and fabulous baked goods. But The Coffeehouse is also a shopping destination, selling items like gourmet coffee beans, loose tea, regional honey, candy, T-shirts and handmade mugs and tea pots.
The Stock-Aide General Store

The Stock-Aide brings a much-needed convenience store to the Manteo waterfront, but with all the charm the historic district deserves. This is an old-fashioned, family-run store that sells candy, drinks, ice cream, beer and wine, ice, cigars and cigarettes, medicines and limited groceries like eggs, bread, milk and other items. The Stock-Aide also sells gift items, like classic toys, Burt’s Bees and really cool bird houses, among other things. An ATM and movie rentals are also offered. While you’re here, check out the rows of glass jars filled with varying amounts of money. These belong to local kids who keep their personal banks here to be able to buy goodies while they’re out and about … this kind of local touch is the epitome of Manteo.

Times Printing Company sells a variety of office supplies from paper and pens to filing cabinets and fax machines. A limited selection of art supplies is available. Burnside Books sells new and used books of all sorts with special sections on local topics and for children.
U.S. Post Office

The post office, located in the strip center known as Chesley Mall (look for the Subway and Food-A-Rama) is the most convenient place to ship packages in Manteo. The window is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during weekdays and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and they have packaging materials there for sale if you need them.
United Parcel Service

This UPS location, though a bit away from the main area of Manteo, offers the services you expect from any UPS location, but with the friendliest, most helpful employees you can find. Call for their hours of business. To get to them, head north on U.S. Highway 64 (toward Fort Raleigh and the Lost Colony) and look for Etheridge Road on your left. It’s directly past a lovely restored farm with sheep grazing in the front pasture.
Wanchese Pottery

In the red-roofed building across from the Maritime Museum, Wanchese Pottery features the handcrafted pottery of local potters Bonnie and Bob Morrill. Their work is beautiful as well as functional. Well-crafted bowls, pitchers, coffee mugs, dinnerware, oil lamps, bird feeders and more are stacked on the shelves in this quaint shop and studio.
